Summer 2009.

For lack of a writing prompt, a good idea, or sudden inspiration, this is to be my topic to pass time today. I haven't written anything I was proud of for a few weeks (here or anywhere else, really) and I'm not looking to change this pattern; in fact, I'm not looking to publish this post - necessarily. I just need to pass time because mild insomnia is becoming a routine visitor.

I have a choice of what to write about: what I will not miss about this summer, or what I am looking forward to about this fall.
(I just put that sentence down here to give appropriate brightness to the rest of the words: I'm really not being negative, I'm marking what is promising to be an end of a mediocre period of time. A welcome end. I'm happy that it's ending.)

[Red is what I'm leaving behind.] [Green is what I'm looking forward to.]

I will not really miss working hard at something I don't like. I'm looking forward to working harder at something that will lead somewhere. I'm not going to miss the strange couple of weeks where I felt isolated from everyone I knew, for no reason other than my online absence and my lack of motivation to end it. It wasn't depression or being anti-social. I, however, don't know where my mind was in that little time frame, the time frame in which I managed to disappear, in a way. I am looking forward to being challenged in classes I actually chose for myself, which now include English and Psychology, two of my favourite things to study outside of business. I was unhappy this summer with time off because I felt it was undeserved and unwarranted, I could not justify it with work well done or work accomplished. I no longer have to face this issue: I will not have any more time off, but I will have the down time required to function. Finally, I am looking forward to deciding how I'm going to spend the two years following this one: deciding about international exchange, deciding about specializations, deciding about internship possibilities.

Really, my willingness to leave summer behind is a repetition of what happens every year. I love fall, I love everything about it. I can't wait until I can wear the clothes which I'm most comfortable in, the colours which I love, and I can't wait until I like what I see outside. Fall is the least pretentious season. It doesn't try too hard to have fun (like summer tends to do), or to be cheerful (despite blistering cold), or to be like the season that comes next (spring break is never warm). I like fall because it just is.

I actually think that I did use a journal prompt here. I found one today that said, "Write about opposites." I just did. Summer 2009 is the opposite of what I expect this fall to be. And I will actually publish this, because a) I generally publish my journal prompts - and I realize now that this is one of them, and b) this is the first thought-stream based entry which I would publish. Three cheers for
expanding horizons.
